Debut of the Year
Year by year, these are the boy and girl names that made the biggest first-year entrance: absent from the national list, then suddenly there. Read top to bottom, the almanac becomes a century of American life written in birth certificates.
How to read the notes. Some debuts follow a headline, character, performer, or song closely enough to name the catalyst. Others reveal only a spelling fashion or regional footprint. When the record does not support a story, we say so. Geography is evidence of where a name caught on, not proof of why. Red entries are known source-data artifacts, preserved here because they reveal how the record can fail.
